BIG BALLS CONQUER SMALL BALLS [PART 2]
by PUMA
10H20, Wednesday 24 July, 2013
Last week we caught up with the number 1 ping pong player in South Africa, Luke Abrahams, who has been involved in the 'Kings of Pong' competition currently running at PUMA Social Club Jozi. If you're at the club on a Friday and use the hashtag, #KingsofPong, in your tweets we could be rewarding you on-the-spot on-the-night, so get involved.

In the meantime here's part 2 of the interview...

What big tournaments are coming up for you, are the 2016 Olympics on the cards?

For the moment my international season is done. There is an invitational tournament in September in Cape Town, which I'm looking forward to, and maybe one or two local tournaments. Early next year we have World Team Champs and then African champs, which is always exciting.
Ooh, it has always been a dream to qualify for the Olympics, and who knows, that dream might still be alive now that I've won the SA title again.

You've been involved in the Kings of Pong tournament at PUMA Social Club Jozi, have you noticed any hidden talent, anyone who could give you a run for your money?

Yeah, what an awesome initiative by Puma don't you think? R20,000 to the winners- you know that's the most prize money ever in SA for a table tennis event. Kudos to Puma for putting it together. As far as the competition goes... If I play with my left hand and hop along on one foot-maybe, just maybe someone could beat me. Jokes. No, I think the guys can get pretty competitive out there, and there's definitely some talent lurking behind the mosaic doors.

Now something for the After Hours Athletes who are competing in Kings of Pong. Luke, can you please give us your 5 top training tips for becoming a ping pong master.

1) Make sure you have good serves
2) Learn to read the spin on the ball
3) Work on your receives
4) Know when to attack the ball
5) A strong defense is equally as important as a good attack
6) (For good measure) - easiest one really, get to eleven first. Lol.

Luke, thanks for putting your championship-winning balls on the table for us. We'll see you on Friday at PUMA Social Club Jozi. Peace.

No, thank you and thanks to Puma for putting this epic event together, I'm sure everyone will enjoy it. Shot.
