We have mad respect for all the runners, organisers and volunteers who took part in the Comrades Marathon last weekend, well done and congratulations. We tried to imagine the training and determination that gets someone over the finish line and well... we were out of breath just thinking about it. Let's be honest, we're a different type of athlete, one that has unexpected marathons when it was just supposed to be one chilled beer.
If you've thought about furthering your abilities as an After Hours Athlete, we've put together a little guide with tips and tricks as well as what you can expect out there.
Training
- Meet new people and make new training buddies - They'll most likely take you to new training grounds.
- Keeping to a training schedule of going out every weekend with sporadic mid-week outings.
- Training happens all year around, don't be lazy.
Pre-race
- Leave work early.
- Make sure you're wearing appropriate attire. The right kicks are important for night-long freshness.
- Meet up with the team you've been training with and get warmed up. Discuss how you're going to tackle the evening.
- Do some simple stretches, lifting bottles to your lips is the most effective exercise.
- Eat pasta, for extra carbs or if you want to line your stomach.
Race
- Make sure your plan of attack is solid, your assault on the town needs to be executed with confidence and style.
- Drinks lots of fluids to keep hydrated (See next point... naturally).
- Pace yourself - You don't want to be 'that' person.
- Keep your training partners close. A buddy system gets you over the finish line whether you have to be carried or not.
- You may see friends on the route, they'll give you a drink as they cheer you on.
- The challenge ends between 03:34 - 05:01.
After-race
- Get some food at the many 24 hour eateries around the town - Your body needs it.
- It's chill time so put on some tunes that put you in that zone.
- Reminisce about the night with your team mates.
- If you're lucky enough, get a rub down before bed.
By following this simple guide you will become a coveted and revered After Hours Athlete whose name is known around the town.
